Opinion | Macron honoring Napoleon: Why it was an insult to France and its people

This week, French President Emmanuel Macron became the focus of controversy after he laid a wreath on the tomb of Napoleon Bonaparte on the 200th anniversary of the historical figure’s death. The debate raises questions about what history France and its leadership choose to honor — and what they choose to bury. Against all odds, the bloodthirsty tyrant is still revered in France as an iconic figure — a “builder” who is “a part of us,” according to Macron’s speech before he laid the wreath.

The First Measured Century: Book: Section 11.6

Black soldiers enlisted in every American war prior to World War II, beginning with the American Revolution, but they were always placed in segregated units under the command of white officers, commonly assigned to manual labor, and usually discharged when the war ended. Nearly 400,000 black enlisted men and a few black officers served in World War I, mostly in noncombat assignments.  The Selective Service Act of 1940 allowed qualified persons to volunteer or be drafted regardless of race or color.

The McDonalds Double Big Mac is too much of a good (bad) thing

Julia Child wasn’t raised to fear food. She didn’t prepare meals based on how heart-healthy they were. She championed saturated fat as if her 6-foot-2 frame were somehow immune to the dietary laws that lay waste to the arteries of lesser mortals. “If you’re afraid of butter,” she once said, “use cream.” But unlike some of her allies who toiled to Frenchify the American palate in the 20th century, Child was no snob.

How Yahoo came up with its new name: Altaba

Yahoo was already a shell of its former self. Now part of the company is getting an obscure new name: Altaba. When Verizon agreed to buy the company for $4.8 billion in July, it planned to purchase just Yahoo's core Internet businesses, which include its email service, sports verticals and various apps. What's left of the embattled technology company would essentially be its ownership in the very valuable Chinese Internet giant Alibaba.
